93rd Academy Awards ceremony!
The Hollywood Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Thursday the animated, documentary and international films that will be eligible for nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards.
For the first time in the history of the awards, some of the contenders have not yet had a theatrical release, but it is expected that before being nominated, they will have achieved it, despite the difficulties that exist due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Of the 93 applicants, presented by each country, the organization will elect on February 9, a total of 15 official candidates, the final nominations will be known on March 15. For the first time and due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a theatrical release has not been required for films to be eligible.
The Academy also released the 27 animated films eligible for Oscar at the 93rd Academy Awards, below the record last year of 32. Among them is the favorite “Soul” from Pixar, who has won more than 18 awards from critics regional.
Also among the eligible films are “Onward”, “Over the Moon”, “Trolls: World Tour” and “Wolfwalkers” from Apple TV +. To determine the five nominees, the members of the animation short and feature film branch will vote as of March 5.
In the field of documentary films, a record 238 films are among the contenders, smashing the record of 170 2017. Among the productions is “Time” of Amazon Studios, which was recognized by the Association of Film Critics Los Angeles, the National Board of Review and the New York Film Critics Circle Awards for Best Documentary.
Members of the documentary branch will begin voting on February 1 to determine a preliminary list of 15 films for February 9. The branch will then vote to elect the five nominees when voting opens for all members, announcing the final nominees for the 93rd Academy Awards, on March 15.
